Additional Information Purpose

Supports Networking and Telecommunication's operations of the university's network and voice infrastructure, providing field installation, repair and maintenance of network and voice equipment, assisting staff in daily operations for network equipment installations and wireless surveys.

Essential Functions

University voice operations: Support Voice staff in the operations of field infrastructure including supporting installation, repair and maintenance of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and analog telephone handsets, equipment and services. Use testing devices, install, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair Ethernet, voice circuits, dry pair, analog and carrier lines. Work with distributed unit technical support staff to complete orders, resolve issues and escalate to voice engineers. Process work orders to provide the right equipment, supplies, materials, and tools to prep and install voice equipment and services per UT standards. Maintain site documentation, asset records, receiving and organizing equipment, accurate job information on work orders and tickets and keep cable assignment records updated. University network operations: Support Edge Network staff in the operations of field infrastructure including performing installation, repair and maintenance of wired and wireless network equipment such as routers, switches and access points. Use testing and survey tools to install, troubleshoot, maintain and repair Ethernet, wired and wireless networks. Work with distributed unit technical support staff to complete orders, resolve issues and escalate to network engineers. Process work orders to provide the right equipment, supplies, materials, and tools to prep and install data circuits and network equipment and services per UT standards. General operations: Maintains customer rapport by listening to and resolving concerns and answering questions. Oversee construction activities including reading and interpreting schematics and blueprints as relates to conduit, cabling, and equipment placement for voice and network projects. Responsible for following and enforcing of industry and university standards, operational policies and on-going procedures such as cable management, equipment labeling, and closet organization. Analyzes recurring issues to formulate an effective resolution action plan including providing feedback to Networking and Telecommunication teams for updates of procedures and standards. Other: Other duties as required including ensuing supervisors are kept informed, maintain university property, and mandatory overtime for identified campus events including sporting events. Completing projects within budget, on time and in a safe manner.

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Required qualifications

The successful candidate will have will have a high school diploma or GED, three years experience in data communication field. Experience deploying and troubleshooting VoIP, analog voice, and network equipment. Experience troubleshooting Ethernet connections. Experience deploying and troubleshooting Cat5/Cat6 cabling and low voltage cabling such as tip-ring, dry-pair. Skill in the use of data communication test equipment, such as cable testers, digital voltmeter, bit error rate tester, frequency meters and oscilloscopes. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate will have experience with Polycom VoIP equipment, Cisco switches and WAPs, Calix equipment, and Fluke cable and wireless testers.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
