Additional Information Purpose

Under the supervision of the Manager for Facilities Design within Information Technology Services (ITS) Networking and Telecommunications, the Engineering Associate shall: manage, develop, direct, evaluate, coordinate and design where required on telecommunications projects.

Essential Functions

Participate in the planning and design of new telecommunications systems and upgrades from inception to completion. Evaluate consultant designs on construction projects and provide guidance to stakeholders. Drive to locations to meet with clients/stakeholders as necessary. Visit construction sites to ensure proper implementation of designs and conformance to project specifications, UT standards, and national codes/standards. Conform to and promote safety requirements established by the university and general contractor. Provide project management and construction management services for projects. Prepare specifications, design drawings, estimates, and conduct on-site bid walks as applicable. When necessary contract with outside engineers, architects, project managers and general contractors for telecom projects. Manage project implementation including emergent issues with emphasis on time schedule control to ensure all tasks are completed within established deadlines and budgets. Communicate details, coordinate work activities and gather estimate requirements from all the different project stakeholders within ITS Networking and Telecommunications. Prepare detailed reports on project progress with clients to include project plans, barriers and solutions, milestones, financial costs/projections and analysis. Make management aware of project status. Work closely with designated clients keeping them informed of planned progress. Support the mission, policies and procedures of the University. Participate as a team member in ITS and provide guidance and recommendations regarding the overall improvement of ITS. Guide subordinates in the development of goals and long range plans for effective and efficient operations. Seek professional development.

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Required qualifications

High school graduation or GED, supplemented by technical training in the fields of networking, telecommunications, or engineering. College-level courses in physics, electrical engineering, and related disciplines, or completion of associate degree in electronics. Eight years of experience in the skilled construction, operation, and maintenance of sophisticated electronic equipment, including three years of experience in scientific research or field operations in networking, telecommunications, or engineering. Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal, to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner. PC experience in a Windows environment. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with all levels of employees, management and contractors. Ability to work constructively and successfully as a team member with overlapping projects in dynamic, multi-tasked environment. Professional demeanor, wear appropriate attire, and exercise good safety habits. Work under stress of deadlines, independently, and with sensitive and confidential information. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced knowledge of IT infrastructure design and field implementation. Strong project management experience in construction or telecommunications systems. Eligible for the Professional Engineering (P.E.) License by the TX Board of Professional Engineers within one year of employment. Experience with inside and outside cable plant (copper and fiber) telecommunication cable systems. Experience with CATV/broadband video systems. Experience with wireless communications infrastructure (cellular/distributed antenna systems and WiFi). Experience with integrated building security systems such as access control, intrusion detection and CCTV. Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) or other BICSI certifications. Experience with AutoCAD, GIS, and Visio. Familiar with TIA standards, NEC and NESC. Experience working in a large university environment.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
